Southern Lights
Stewart Island is a great place to see the Aurora Australis, the best months being March to September. With clear skies and no light pollution the chances of getting some amazing shots are good! Check out this guide too.
This website shows an up to date Aurora Forecast, using real-time solar wind data from Nasa’s ACE spacecraft, matched with data obtained from a network of magnetometers located worldwide, they are able to forecast, with reasonable accuracy, how the Southern Lights will behave up to one hour in advance.
Obviously the weather plays a part too so flexibility with your travel arrangements can help.
Thanks to Riki Rudin-Jones and Sandra Whipp for the stunning photos. Sandra is also a big fan of Astrophotography so if you need any help, advice or a guide get in touch!!
